Child Bike Seat, Bike Trailer, or Cargo Bike Part Three — Rider Profiles

In our early discussions planning this series, our curiosity was inspired. We live and breathe Cargo Biking, and we know why we make certain design choices and offer the bikes we do. Being so close to our own thinking, we wondered why people choose the style and model of cargo bikes that they do. So to learn insights from other cargo cyclists, we took to the Twittersphere to ask what people looked for when selecting a cargo bike to carry kids, as well as some reflection about their experience. We got many great responses by email and have included some of them in this post.  We hope you find it as informative as we did!

Child Bike Seat, Bike Trailer, or Cargo Bike? – Part One

There are many options for traveling by bicycle with your children.  Should you choose a child bike seat, bike trailer, or a cargo bike?  Making the best choice for your needs can be a bit confusing.  We have created this primer series to help you choose the best set-up for your needs when traveling with children by bicycle.

(This part is intended as an overview of some general considerations that will help you to select a suitable bike for the job, and examines some of the benefits and challenges of choosing the bike over the car.  Part Two examines the various choices available for meeting your needs, including different bike styles and accessory options such as a child bike seat, bike trailer, cargo bikes, and gear carriers.  Your best choice will be influenced by your needs, which you will better understand by reading (this) Part One.)

Here’s a post to help you cover the basics.

The foundation of your dream ride!

A custom Yuba Mundo is a great way to show off your personal riding style, from the look to the ride.  Here are some basic components to consider when building your Mundo:

Yuba Mundo Frameset

 - Rear Wheel - The Mundo’s rear drop-outs are 14mm, not 3/8″ (10mm).  So, you’ve got some options here:

  • Purchase a Yuba Mundo Rear cargo bike wheel.  This is the easiest and likely the cheapest way to go unless you already have a rear wheel.
  • Purchase a set of Yuba Axle Adapters.  These fit over the round axle and space a 3/8″ wheel in a Mundo dropout.
  • Find/Build your own wheel based on a BMX-style 14mm axle.  (You’re on your own here.)

    14mm to 10mm Axle Adapters

-Yuba Seat post (it’s an unusual size at 31.8mm x 500mm, so its easiest to get it from us)

You can purchase a seatpost from Yuba. Our seatposts are 500mm.  This is needed if you are over 6-feet tall.  Otherwise, you can purchase a 31.8 x 350-400mm from most bike shops.

-Wheelskirts (if you ever are going to have children ride on the back, they’re required.)

We also strongly recommend these accessories:

Utility deck  — You can make your own, but in case you’d rather not…

Stand-Alone Kickstand – Nobody makes a stand like the “Stand-Alone”.  This kickstand ROCKS!

Deflopilator – Keeps the front wheel straight when the bike is on the Stand Alone

And one more thing:
-Mundo Chain (156 links!)

(Of course, there’s always the full line of Add-ons to trick out your new custom Mundo, such as the Bread Basket and the Go-Getter Bag.)

Custom Mundo FAQs

Rear Hub Spacing: 135 mm

Maximum Tire Clearance: 2.15 in (with standard drive train).

When you’re done, we’d love to see a picture of your Custom Mundo, either by email, @YubaBicycles on Twitter and Instagram, or Facebook.

Yuba Rolls in Yosemite

Travis N. recently sent in this video of his family vacation in Yosemite this fall. He found the Mundo v4 to be the perfect way to get around with kids on the valley floor.

Dear Yuba,
Our adventures with our Yuba Mundo begin in Yosemite in October. But first, I need to go back a few months. In August, our family moved to a new city where we hope to be able to walk and bike to more of our daily activities. For many months, I had been looking at options for transporting 2 kids plus gear by bike (our kids are 6 and 4.5). I decided upon a Yuba Mundo, and I was planning a custom build. But, as the dust settled from our move, and with a trip to Yosemite planned for October, I ran out of time to order parts and assemble a custom bike. I decided it was best to have a bike to bring to Yosemite, and I picked up a stock Yuba Mundo v4 from iCargoBike a week before we left.

I am so glad that I did! Our Yuba Mundo, and bikes in general, proved to be a wonderful way to experience Yosemite Valley. Riding on the bike trails was breathtaking, with beautiful tree canopies and majestic granite walls surrounding us. The convenience of riding a bike to trail heads that had remote or no parking was great. Likewise for the general store in Yosemite Village. We carried sweaters, water, and snacks in a reusable shopping bag attached to the bike. We also managed to carry 2 boxes of firewood back from the market. The best part was we were smiling the entire time.

Thanks,
Travis N.

Child Seats and Mundo versions

The Yuba Mundo Utility Bike is a practical and comfortable solution for carrying kids. For kids from 1 to 4 years of age (up to 22kg or 48lbs), we recommend strongly the use of a Child Carrier. The model of choice recommended by Yuba is the Peanut Shell, it is:

• comfortable
• provides great lateral and head protection
• easy to install
• solid and safe attachment system to the Mundo platform
• 2 seats can be attached to the Mundo platform
• CPSC and TÜV certified

The Peanut Shell is compatible with the Mundo V3.0 (21 speed or frame sets, blue, tangerine, black bikes) and with Mundo V2.0 (6 speed, 18 speed, green, orange). The width of the Mundo rear rack on those two versions is 18.1cm.

The version Mundo (single speed, 6 speed, upgrade 18speed kit, dark blue and red) are NOT compatible with the Peanut Shell, the rack is 22.5cm wide. If interested in carrying your little one on a V1.0 Mundo, we recommend the Bobike Child seat. The seat with a little tweaking can be installed, however it can’t be easily removed. Be aware that the Bobike doesn’t offer the same level of comfort and protection as the Peanut Shell does.

How to know if your Mundo is compatible with the Peanut Shell?
-> Measure the width of the rack if +/- 18.1 cm, then yes.
